The Kelowna ChiefsÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™ Aiden Morcom, Kesler Fyfe of the Revelstoke Grizzlies, and the Princeton PosseÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s Tyson Horiachka and Brennan Watterson have received $1,000 bursaries from the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).
Morcom, who graduated from Kelowna Secondary School in 2023 and has taken courses at Okanagan College, is looking to earn a business degree to pursue a career in the financial industry.
He has volunteered at several events with the Chiefs including Skating with Santa, delivering Christmas hampers for the Central Okanagan Food Bank, visits to Black Mountain Elementary, Remembrance Day ceremonies, and many others.
Horiachka graduated from Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park, Alta. in 2022 and will attend Drury University in Springfield, Missouri to study business.
During his three seasons with Princeton, he earned the Posse Coaches Award, KIJHL Most Sportsmanlike Player, Bill Ohlhausen Division Most Sportsmanlike Player Award, the Posse Team MVP Award and the Bill Ohlhausen Division MVP Award. Horiachka was also involved in many volunteer activities in the community.
Watterson graduated from Briercrest Christian Academy (Caronport, Sask.) in 2022 and plans to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Sciences to work as an engineer.
He was involved with Princeton Minor Hockey, the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day ceremony, the Terry Fox Run, participated in the Learn to Skate program, Truth and Reconciliation Ceremonies, as well as road hockey events and Family Day.
Fyfe graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Edmonton, Alta., in 2022 and plans to attend either the University of Lethbridge or UBC Okanagan to study neuroscience and become a chiropractor.
He was named the KIJHLÎÚÑ»´«Ã½™s Community Player of the Year and received the Grizzlies Unsung Hero Award and Fan Favourite Award.
Fyfe volunteered at Revelstoke Days, Meals on Wheels, and the Revelstoke Thrift Store. Grizzlies General Manager Ryan Parent described Fyfe as an individual who is a respected member of the community, always willing to help with events and volunteering his time.
The KIJHL handed out a total of 11 bursaries to student-athletes and a league official.
