Children, band members planted 300 seedlings April 14

Recovery from the 2023 Bush Creek East wildfire continues to take root in Skwlāx te Secwepemcúl̓ecw.

On Monday, April 14, band members and children from the Wellness Head Start program planted 300 fir and yellow pine seedlings in the Metíl̓e ne Nekéct (Children's Forest) as part of a larger reforestation initiative.

"In all, there will be 16,000 seedlings planted on band land," communications coordinator Larry Read said, adding that more planting will be done over the next few weeks with some funding from Interfor. "These replace trees which were destroyed in the 2023 Bush Creek East wildfire."

On the seedlings planted Monday, the kids attached blue ribbons with their names on them and, over time, are being encouraged to go back and visit their trees and take photos of as they both grow over the years.
